No One's Rose
Why, you ask, do I always wear black? It is a mourning for my life.
Sie fragen, warum ich immer Schwarz trage? Das ist die Trauer um mein Leben.
- Masha, „The Seagull“ (Anton Chekhov)
Unmournable, black, no time for mourning, black, vernissage, burnt earth, black, smart phone, blackout, limousine, curfew, black.
Sascha was born and raised in Kyiv of the Soviet Union. In 1995 she left far for Shanghai, in the age of Reform and Opening-up. There she got a name from 18th century Chinese classical literature: Shi Xiangyun. After twenty years, she returned on European soil after a world trip. She found herself in Berlin. She started learning German. She got a job selling properties in an upmarket real estate agency. Sascha, once a ballet student par excellence, entered a private Russian-speaking theatre and played a role from 19th century imperial Russian classical literature: Masha. Wir blühn, seelenhell, Rose, shattered in layers and fragments of time. (Paul Celan “Psalm”) She encounters Her Face, by Providence, Celan’s words, war impacts, a demanding full-time parallel to her full-time job. Words rooted in experience of brutality, words that subverted Adorno’s famous statement ‘Nach Auschwitz ein Gedicht zu schreiben, ist barbarisch’, they haunt they reoccur in the sinister spooky face of histories, inside the warmth of fainted dreams, outside the chill morning in bedroom, between languages, jobs, identities, experiences and their unconnectability. They barely spell. Hardly readable. Wer erwachte? Heimatlich. Wohin gings? (Paul Celan “Niemandsrose“)
